York Carers Centre

York Carers Centre is an independent charity and a network member of the national Carers Trust. Working in partnership with carers, statutory and voluntary organisations to ensure unpaid carers throughout York have access to confidential information, advice and support. They work with carers to influence positive change in service delivery with local government, employers, schools and health providers.

York Carers Centre supports carers of all ages:

  • Adults
  • Young adults (18 to 25)
  • Young carers (5 to 18)

The funding comes from a variety of sources and the principal funders are the City of York Council and the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group.

They rely on grants from charitable trusts and on donations and fundraising to enable them to deliver specific projects.

Loan equipment from Be Independent

Based on assessment details and the equipment needed, when you loan equipment from Be Independent they'll arrange:
  • delivery to your home address, or alternative address in York
  • options for you, carers or healthcare professionals to collect equipment
  • fitting and installation of equipment in your home, if requested by a healthcare professional
  • maintenance of equipment to ensure statutory compliance
  • collection or return of equipment no longer required
  • cleaning of returned equipment at our decontamination unit
  • repair, refurbishment and recycling of equipment, where viable

Adult Social Care – York

As a carer, under the Care Act 2014, you're entitled to have a carer’s assessment to understand the physical, emotional and practical impact that caring has on your life

Assessing your needs is a free and confidential service, you can:
  • have an assessment over the telephone
  • speak to them in person
A carer's assessment:
  • looks at your caring situation
  • checks that your needs are taken into account
  • identifies the physical, emotional and practical impact that caring has on your life
  • is an opportunity to discuss the things that could make caring easier for you
You'll talk about:
  • the kind of support the person you care for needs
  • what help you might need to provide care
  • how to look after your own wellbeing
  • maintaining your own health
  • balancing caring with your life, work and family commitments
When you've completed an assessment (either by yourself or with help), they'll contact you to discuss your situation and what support may be available to help you.

Crossroads currently support family carers and the people they care for across many areas in North Yorkshire, including:

They specialise locally in enabling respite for carers by providing the people they look after with home visits from their professional care workers. Their aim is to reduce the everyday stresses carers face by enabling them to take a break on a regular or occasional basis, with the knowledge that the person requiring care is safe and supported.
