Winter Fuel Payment

Important Winter Fuel Payment Changes in 2024

As an unpaid carer, we know that every penny counts, especially as the colder months approach. The cost of living is already a challenge, and staying warm during winter can add extra financial pressure. If you or someone you care for relies on the Winter Fuel Payment to help with heating costs, it’s important to be aware of upcoming changes to the scheme in 2024.

What’s changing with the Winter Fuel Payment?

From 2024, the government is introducing new eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment. Previously, all pensioners were entitled to this payment, but from now on, it will be means-tested. This means only those who receive Pension Credit or other certain benefits will qualify.

What does this mean for carers?
If the person you care for is over 66 and relies on the Winter Fuel Payment, they may no longer automatically receive it. They will need to meet new criteria, including receiving at least one of the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit

How much is the Winter Fuel Payment?

The payment helps cover heating bills and varies based on age. Those aged 66 to 79 will receive £200, while those 80 and above will get £300. It’s typically paid automatically in November or December, so make sure the cared for’s financial situation qualifies before the winter months hit.

What can you do if you or the person you care for isn’t eligible?

If these changes affect your household, don’t worry – there are other forms of support available. Make sure to:

  • Check for extra benefits: You could be entitled to other benefits, such as Pension Credit, which may open doors to additional support like the Cold Weather Payment.
  • Search for grants: There are grants available that you don’t need to pay back. These can provide extra financial help during the winter months.
  • Get more support: Reach out for money management advice or debt support services. You don’t have to face financial struggles alone.

As a carer, managing finances can be stressful, but there are resources available to help you and your loved ones stay warm this winter. Be proactive – use benefits calculators and check eligibility for any support you’re entitled to.
