Carers Rights Update

Empowering Carers: New Rights Under the Carer’s Leave Act 2024

As of April 2024, a groundbreaking change is coming for unpaid carers across the UK. The Carer’s Leave Act 2023 gives employees the legal right to take up to one week of unpaid leave each year to provide or arrange care for a dependent with a long-term care need. This law is a major step forward in recognising the vital role carers play in supporting those they care for while balancing employment.

What Does the Carer’s Leave Act Mean for You?

The new right allows unpaid carers to take leave in flexible increments, whether half days, full days, or a week at a time. The leave can be used for those with a long-term physical or mental illness, a disability, or old-age-related needs. Importantly, this is a day-one right, so no matter how long you’ve been with your employer, you’re entitled to take this leave.

Why Is This Important?

With over 2.3 million unpaid carers balancing work and care, the introduction of this law offers much-needed support. For many, juggling both responsibilities has been overwhelming, and this legislation provides a legal framework to take time off without fear of dismissal or negative consequences.

Employers cannot refuse your request, and while they can postpone it due to business disruptions, the leave must be allowed within a month of the initial request. This provides carers with the flexibility and protection they need, giving peace of mind to those who dedicate their time and energy to caring for family members and friends.

Looking Forward

As this new law comes into force, it’s crucial for employers to update their carer policies, educate managers, and ensure they are supporting working carers. The Act marks a huge step in empowering carers, helping them manage their responsibilities without risking their employment.
